Moko Lesney Matchbox 66c Greyhound bus

The Lesney model of the Greyhound Bus was a shortened version of the real bus so the model would look in scale with the rest of the range but still fit in to a regular length box. compare the pictures below of the model and the real bus and you can see Lesney removed a section so that ther were only three windows on the upper deck instead of four as on the real bus.

The model joined the Matchbox 1-75 series in 1966 and was painted a silver grey and it had a black base, 10 x 36mm black plastic wheels on domed head riveted axles and because of the colour no silver trim was needed, it was fitted with a white plastic interior and featured spring suspension which always seems to sag at the rear end. The windows were usually amber tinted but the very early issues which were released mainly in the U.K.were fitted with clear windows. Early models were fitted with blue decals which could have a white or yellow background or later grey labels with a white background were used. The leading edge of the decals were cut at an angle to fit to the shape of the bus and most of the grey labels did too but towards the end of production the labels were cut with square ends.

The windscreen surround for the top deck was smooth on the first issues but a raised frame was added in the very early days of production, also this early variation had curved corners to the rear window, very soon the upper corners were squared off,
There were two molds making this model, one of them was damaged for quite some time and possibly never got repaired so due to the damage the bus can be found with the area between the passenger door and bumper partly filled in or open. Towards the end of production the other mold was damaged in the area of the upper right hand rear light, this was very poorly repaired leaving a body casting line across the light (see photos). Then the base was modified by the addition of a towing hitch and finally the removal of the ridge at the top of the rear window.

It is a very common piece except for the clear window variant but that is fairly common in the UK. the rarest is the first issue without the front windscreen frame, it was available in 'E' and 'F' type boxes , converted to superfast wheels in 1970 and deleted in 1971.
