Matchbox Superfast MB66-c Greyhound Bus

The Greyhound GMC Scenicruiser coach is known to have been a personal favourite of Jack Odell.
This coach joined the SuperFast range for just over one year in 1970. It received baseplate modifications with channels made for the narrowest standard sized usually black (or uncommonly dark red) plastic axle clips to retain its 3 axles fitted with 9.5x2mm solid or hollow 5 slot SuperFast wheels.The rear double axle clip was specially created for this toy.

The bodyshell was unchanged, with differences between the left and the right body castings made by the #66 tool remaining and being available in equal numbers. The body casting was actually a shortened version of the Greyhound. One complete bay window length was removed from the raised rear section of the body as otherwise the vehicle would be too long for the box, or if it were scaled down sufficiently and made to the correct dimensions the bus would be far too narrow and of too small of scale to fit in with the rest of the range.
All were painted and labelled in the same colours with silver body, orange windows & white seats as the final regular wheels issues, although substantial numbers were fitted with baseplates painted with surplus regular wheels colours best known from the pink of the #23 trailer caravan, the light yellow as used on the #39 Pontiac convertible and the pale primrose yellow of the #45 Corsair as well as the most common baseplate colour which was gloss black.

The first run were packaged in a regular wheels ´F´ box with black `SuperFast´ overprinted although most were shipped in ´G´ boxes or USA or Canada blisterpacks with copyright dates between 1969 and 1971.
No further use of this tooling was made post 1971 although Jack Odell did make a larger version of this same model coach for his Lledo range, one of very few Lesney toys to be remade by his new company.
