1964 saw Lesney introduce the 28c Jaguar Mk 10 to the Matchbox 1-75 series. It was painted a rather dull metallic brown and it had an ivory coloured plastic interior which had a towing hook incorporated into the design, It was fitted with clear plastic windows and the bonnet (hood) could be opened by tilting it forwards as on the real Jaguar. The engine can be body colour or left in unpainted metal. The baseplate was painted gloss black and was held on by an L shaped bracket at the front of the body locating through a slot at the front of the baseplate and by a single round rivet at the rear. It is usually found with 10 x 36 Black plastic wheels on domed head rounded axles but it has been known to be fitted with 9 x 36 black plastic wheels. Spring suspension is a feature on this model, This was achieved by the insertion of a plastic leaf spring under the baseplate which was held rigid in the center and the free ends sat over the axles to provide the springing. Mask sprayed silver trim was applied to the radiator grille, Headlights and the front bumper.A handful of models have been found that were fitted with bases that had the words "Matchbox Series" omitted, These were fitted with either 10 x 36 grey plastic wheels or 10 x 36 black plastic wheels and are known as the 'three line base', It is believed that the single black wheel 3 line base is a prototype and the very rare grey wheel 3 line base are pre production models, The "Matchbox Series" lettering was added before the model went into full production with the regular four line base, An unusual oodity of the 3 line base models is the grey wheeled models had silver trim applied to the headlights grill and bumper as on a regular version but the black wheeled models had no silver trim at all. Apart from the above mentioned base text which are extremely rare there are no casting variations except the jaguar can have either a number 1 or 2 cast on the inside of the bonnet (hood). The 3 line base with black wheels is possibly rarer than the grey wheeled version but because it is a variation that would not stand out in the display cabinet the value is lower than the grey wheeled version. One version was recently seen with a four line base and grey wheels but it has been unlisted in other catalogues and is possibly an error piece so is not in the variation table until other examples have been verified. It was sold in 'E' type boxes and was deleted to make way for the 28c mack dump truck in 1968. Updated: 14-04-11, Antonin Shenk (Shenk) from the forum has shown us unrecorded baseplate and body casting modifications, As these are almost impossible to see without removing the baseplate they have not been added to the variation table but this may be amended following further research.
