Matchbox Models of Yesteryear Y-40 1931 Mercedes Benz 770
The Y40-1 1931 Mercedes Benz 770 or "Grosser Mercedes" joined the range in 1991 in the authentic grey and blue colours of a vehicle on display in the in the Mercede Benz motor museum at Stuttgart in Germany. The model was originally intended to be the number Y-53 as inscribed on the inside of the clear plastic roof panel but for reasons unknown it was eventually released with the Y-40 designation on the baseplate. It only appeared in the one colour scheme of grey and blue which probably has something to do with previous Grosser owners being a certain Mr Adolf Hitler and Mr Hermann Göring so I don't think we can expect a recolour anytime soon, Although a beautiful model of a wonderful car it was not replaced or deleted but no further issues were released.

Above: The Mercedes had a grey painted body, wings and running boards and a black baseplate which was cast seperately to the wing & running boards so this must have been quite expensive to produce, It feels quite a heavy model too. The roof was textured blue plastic and it had a chrome plated tensioner on each side. The interior was dark red plastic and the dashboard gauges were highlighted in white and it had a black plastic steering wheel, It also featured windows with a dividing screen between the the driver & passenger compartment and the windscreen had the wipers molded in.
Above: The mercedes featured a chromed grille, headlights, front and rear bumper, bonnet side exhaust pipe, roof tensioners and luggage rack and also to the push fit wheels and twin side mounted spares,
