Matchbox King-Size No.K-8 Scammell 6 x 6 Prime Mover, Low Loader Trailer & Caterpillar D9
|
The Lesney Matchbox King-Size K-8 Scammell 6 x 6 Prime Mover with Low Loader Trailer and Caterpillar D9 joined the range in 1962 and has proved to be a collectors favourite, The Scammell tractor unit and its trailer were always painted orange and the grille on the Scammell was trimmed in silver, The Scammell baseplate is usually silver but examples with black baseplates are known, This was also the first King-Size model to feature plastic windows, The Caterpillar D9 was actually a K-3 without the dozer blade, It was painted yellow with a red engine and had the usual green rubber tracks, All three vehicles can be found with unpainted metal wheels or rollers on the early models or red plastic wheels & rollers on the later issues. The earliest models had square door decals on the Scammell and longer trailer decals that read 'Laing' which also had 'Civil Engineering Contractors' written alongside in very small lettering, Later issues just had 'Laing' to the trailer sides and the last issues had this written in much thicker letters but on a shorter decal. The set was packaged in D and E type boxes and was replaced by the Guy Warrior Car Transporter in 1967. Laings were a well known British Civil Engineering Construction Company that actually built Lesneys modern Lee Conservancy road factory in 1965.
