Matchbox King-Size No.K-4 Leyland Tipper Truck
|
In 1969 Lesney introduced the Matchbox King-Size K-4 Leyland Tipper Truck as a replacement for the GMC Fruehaur Hopper Train. The Leyland tippers all had amber windows, Chromed baseplate & grille and red plastic hubs with black plastic tyres, The model was initially released with a dark red/maroon cab and chassis with a silver grey tipper body and a 'L E Transport' labels to the sides of the tipper, The labels were later changed for 'Wates' labels. The model was then recoloured to a burnt orange cab with either a pale lime green or metallic lime green tipper and both types had 'Wates' labels, The final version was a promotional issue of 500 pieces made specifically for Wates that was recoloured to pale lime green cab, chassis and tipper with 'Wates' labels that were passed on to his customers. In 1970/71 the orange & metallic lime green model was fitted with superfast wheels and later a powder blue version was also released, The model was packaged in F type window boxes and in 1974 it was replaced by the 'Big new K-4 the 'Big Tipper'.
