It is from Lesney and only made in England from 1985 to 1988, Macau from 1988 to 1989 and then China from 1989 to 1996.

It is scaled at 1/40 (why not 1/43 I'll never understand!) and does come under the Models of Yesteryear umbrella as number Y-2 but has no ancestry or production connections to the earlier Y-5 models.

Was this designed prior to the collapse of Lesney or after the Universal take over?

It has the (often sad) progression to a larger and larger model with increasing plastic components. It's still a nice model and I do like some of the additional details.

Prototypes were all plastic, and very light. First runs were all black.

These were made externally by Rayleigh Technical Design (RTD), A company set up by redundant ex Lesney employees.

Lesney went into riecership across the 1981-82 period putting the Matchbox brand as well as Lesney's tooling into the ownership of Universal Holdings/Universal Toys.
