More YY restorations
More YY restorations
This Y5 Bentley was more work than it looked. All the white metal parts were bent and there was some white knuckle moments heating and straightening them. The steering wheel, the headlights and the windscreen all needed to be carefully straightened. One front fender had to be heated and straightened too. The original headlight assembly was too far gone (bent up and missing one bucket), so I had to use another bent up set off a newer model. That required some modifications to make it work on the first issue casting. All I'm waiting on now is for the Union Jack decals to arrive. Since I was lucky enough to find a half way decent first issue casting, I painted it in the first issue color of Metallic Green.
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."
Re: More YY restorations
I'm working my way up to a gift set contents at some point. So far I've done a Y3 London Tramcar, Y4 Shand Mason, Y5 Bently, Y12 Horse drawn bus and waiting in the wings I have a steam locomotive, Sentinel Steam Wagon and a Fowler Showmans. Who knows what will come along next, oh wait, I forgot about the Y6 AEC Y type lorry and the Y7 Leyland van. What scares me is that I am starting to develop a genuine fondness for these models (don't tell the wife).

What a fabulous looking restoration Joe and the metallic green looks very good.
Joe, is this a first issue casting referenced in the MICA white book or another book.

First, let me say that I am no YY expert and my knowledge is (very) limited to what I've learned from this and other forums. For answers to my questions I usually go to Mick's Matchbox Memories web page and look up the model I am interested in or working on. If I can't find the answer there I ask questions here. I have no books or guides that deal specifically with YYs. The only book I have that even covers YYs is a C. Mack's revised pocket guide from 2000 (which will give me a picture I can place with a model number and little else) . I could use a decent book and wouldn't mind some recommendations for the one single best book on the subject.GHOSTHUNTER wrote:Joe, is this a first issue casting referenced in the MICA white book or another book.

That said, my comments are based on the simple divisions of this casting between those with the radiator cast as part of the body and those where the radiator is a separate part. Beyond that description, I have no clue as to what other differences might set castings apart from one another. But, I am open to learning any information regarding those differences.
I can show more photos, of specific areas of this model, if it will help determine the answer to your question, so just ask.

I found Alex Pich'as book to be just the right level for me: viewtopic.php?f=32&t=7176Tinman wrote:I could use a decent book and wouldn't mind some recommendations for the one single best book on the subject.

I did a little searching to find this book to no avail. Anyone know if it can still be purchased through the usual sources (amazon for example) or if it's already one I have to search for via the used book trade?

Re: More YY restorations
OK, the following images will be found on 1st casting Y-5(B) Bentley models.
1, The baseplate will stop short of the front axle. 2, The top edge of the rear panel under the tonneau cover does NOT have a cut-out. 3, There is a small fill-in between the rear springs as shown in the middle picture of the three below. Ignore the top picture of the three as this is for the preproduction castings.

Alex first (thick ) book is sold out long time ago. The later thin book probably still is available via Rockertron by example.Tinman wrote:I did a little searching to find this book to no avail. Do I understand it right you made a "new" model of the 1st rare color for this model ?
I must say I don't like that. Someday. (maybe not now) such models come onto the market.
