Were the boxes made from exotic hard woods or are the varnished teak?

The boxes have a very fine grain to them so I think they might be box wood, Box is what was used to make old tool handles etc, More commonly known as privet or hedge.

Hello Bob,

I found on ebay, this collection in a wooden box.
Is this interesting or rare?

Greetings Mike.

Hi Mike
The much vaunted "Connoisseurs Set" from 1984.

The publicity said that the set would double in value in a given time frame (by 1990) and if it didn't, you could return it and get your money back. Whether anyone ever tried this, I don't know, but now only worth about 50% of the original retail price. Gave rise to the saga of the James Neale vans.
