Lesney Prime Mover, Trailer & Bulldozer set |
|
The Lesney Prime mover set was initially tooled up in 1950 and measured 3040mm (13 and a quarter inches) long, It was briefly put into production but shelved during the Korean war & the embargo on the zinc stocks and not released again until 1954. The Prime mover was painted orange and had gold trim to the engine and fuel tanks, It had removable green painted covers to the engine sides and the lettering to the sides was picked out in white, An orange painted driver was fitted into the cab and it had six grey painted wheels. A handful are known to be fitted with a clockwork motor which was fitted inside the vehicle and viewing the underneath of one it can be seen that the rear struts below the rear axles are in a drop down position to allow sufficient clearance for the clockwork motor. The Prime mover was really too large for Lesneys die casting machines so the driver, front wings and fuel tanks and the rear crossmembers and mudguards were seperate castings. The Bulldozer was the same one as previously issued but the dozer blade lifting arm was removed and the rubber tracks were usually black. The Bulldozer body was ususlly painted yellow and the dozer blade and arms were red or in the alternate but less common colour scheme was green all over. "Lesney-Moko" and "Made in England" were cast into the rear of the blade. The trailer was usually painted blue but examples in brown have been seen, Later issues had four studs cast in to the rear end of the trailer onto which the seperate die cast rear ramps sat, The first issue of the trailer had no lettering on the underneath but soon "A lesney-Moko Toy" was cast in which was later followed by "Made in England". It was fitted with a die cast drawbar which must have been quite delicate because there are very few trailers with the original drawbar still fitted. The set was packaged in a blue two piece box with a label which displayed the contents applied to one end, The set is very popular among collectors and being a toy with lots of play value few are to be found in mint and boxed condition so prices are high for this one. |
