Lesney Matchbox Major pack M6a Pickfords 200 ton transporter |
|
The Lesney model of the Pickfords Scammell Constructor and Crane 200 ton transporter trailer joined the range in 1960 and was an instant success with little boys around the world. Pickfords are a well known British company that can trace their roots back to 1650 and this model also had a spelling mistake on the base as Scammell is wrongly spelt as Scammel. In reality the Scammell was only rated as 132 tons so for a 200 ton payload a second Scammell would have been used as a pusher and with extremely heavy loads or for moving over steep hills a third one would have been added to the front. The Lesney model had a dark blue tractor unit and trailer dollies and the trailer body was painted maroon and it had six white "Pickfords" decals appled to the sides of the tractor unit and trailer dollies. The radiator grille was mask sprayed with silver trim. The wire towing connector was painted blue to begin with and later it was changed to black and finally it was left unpainted. The later issues were recoloured to a lighter blue tractor unit & dollies with a red trailer bed, The wheels were knobbly black plastic but the later issues were fitted with finer tread black plastic wheels, The axles were always dome head with rounded ends. The model was packaged in six different boxes with the first two being 'B' type Moko Lesneys, then a 'C' type Lesney box and two 'D' type with full colour picture boxes and the last issue was in an 'E' box. It was a good seller in its day as there are plenty of unboxed models to be found but probably because it was such a nice toy mint and boxed examples are not so common, Due to the lack of internal packaging the tractor unit would drive itself back & forth on the trailer when in transit so many mint and unplayed with models can be chipped on the trailer swan necks. It was deleted in 1966 to make way for the M6b racing car transporter. Updated: 14-08-10, Torbjörn (MR.T) from the forum has found a rare unlisted crossover M6 with the early type dark blue tractor and trailer dollies but with the later coloured dark red trailer bed which has not been recorded until now. |
