Lesney Matchbox Major pack M6b 'BP' racing car transporter |
|
The Lesney M6b racing car transporter replaced the 200 ton Pickfords transporter in 1966. At the time this one was made many racing cars were transported by this type of vehicle which were usually custom built but this one appears to be a made up design although it has similarities with other transporters used at the time. This is another larger scale model which should really have been a kingsize from the start as it was just too larger scale to fit in with the other majors. The model was painted green with a silver internal ramp, baseplate and drop down rear door. It had an ivory plastic interior and clear plastic windows and skylight, The wheels were red plastic hubs which are prone to shrinkage and black plastic tyres, The axles were always dome head with rounded ends. It was enhanced by the fitting of two black, white & yellow decals to each side. There were a few casting modifications, Early on the internal ramp had a tongue added which would locate into a slot which was added to the rear door, The rear bumper was thickened fairly early and the ridge along the front edge of the baseplate was enlarged slightly. Pre production models are known to have different decals to the regular issues, the pre pros had "Monza, Le Mans, Sebring and Nurburgring" and the regular issue had "Le Mans, Sebring, Silverstone and Nurburgring". The model was only in the range for a year before the Major series was deleted but this one was moved into the Kingsize range to become the K5b, In the Majors series it was packaged in an 'E' type box, It is not too hard to find and the prices are reasonable which is probably due to the models larger scale as to most collectors it does not have the charm of the smaller toys so it is not a particularly desirable model. |
