Lesney Matchbox Major pack M2a Bedford Walls ice cream truck |
|
The M2a Bedford articulated ice cream truck joined the Major pack range in late 1957 and was made as a larger vehicle type to go with the 1-75 series models. The Bedford tractor unit was always painted blue and the shade of blue is slightly lighter on the later issues, It had silver trim to the grille, front bumper and headlights but the trim to the bumper was soon omitted. The trailer was painted cream with a black baseplate and it was the first Matchbox toy to have decals applied which can be found either way around. The early issues had solvent applied decals but these were replaced for waterslide because the solvent applied decals were in the late Jack Odells words "Made the factory a bloody mess!". The wheels were grey metal on dome head axles with crimped ends to begin with but they were changed for grey plastic wheels on crimped axles, Later the trailer was recoloured to off white and eventually axles with rounded ends were used. The Bedford was always packaged in a 'B' type Moko Lesney box, It was replaced by another Bedford artic the M2b Articulated freight truck in 1961. |
