Moko Lesney Matchbox 40c hay trailer



The Lesney model of the Hay trailer was introduced into the Matchbox 1-75 series in mid 1967 and was the second part in a two piece set, the other half being the 39c Ford tractor.
Like the tractor it was painted blue although shades can vary,
It was fitted with 6mm yellow plastic hubs fitted with 13mm black plastic tyres and these were mounted on dome head axles with rounded ends, The front axle was mounted on a turntable complete with a towing bar so it could be steered by the tractor, it came with two yellow plastic racks or raves that clipped into the ends of the body.

There were several casting variations, first the body where the racks attach, version one has holes and they go right through to the other side, these are for the racks to locate into but it had no central clip to retain it.
version two has rack holes and central clip, version three has holes and clip but the holes don't penetrate through to the bottom, Version 4 has the clip but no holes.
Then on the underneath above the rear axle, version one has a hexagonal center and rack mounting holes, version two has a round center and rack mounting holes, version three has a round center but the holes are covered by blocks, each of the three versions can be found with a high or low letter 'A'.

Finally there are three types of yellow plastic rack, type one has pins that locate into the holes in the body but it don't have the central brace, version two has pins and brace, version three has a brace but no pins.

The trailer is probably one of the most undesirable models that were ever made by Lesney, it is still very common and is cheap even in mint and boxed condition. It was packaged in 'E' and 'F' type boxes. The hay trailer was not suitable for conversion to superfast wheels but it was kept in production well into the superfast era, it was packaged in a 'G' type superfast box with the word 'superfast' removed from it, The trailer was recoloured several times and was still in production well into the 1980s.
