Moko Lesney Matchbox 2b Aveling Barford site dumper



The second Lesney model of the Muir Hill site dumper joined the Matchbox 1-75 series in 1957. Like the other early 1-75s this one was a scaled up version of the previous issue that was pretty much identical to the earlier one but on this dumper the gold trim to the grille was omitted.
The body was painted green and the bucket was painted red and it had a brown painted driver that was a seperate casting which will often part company with the dumper so playworn examples are nearly always driverless.
The wheels were grey metal, 9 x 18 on the front and 14 x 18 at the rear, Only the first run was fitted with flat head axles with crimped ends, The next issue had dome head axles with crimped ends.
The wheels were soon changed to grey plastic but before this change occurred one unusual run used the metal wheels from the 44a Rolls Royce on the front axle which had the number 44 cast in to the sides.
The final issues had dome head axles with rounded ends.
There were three slightly different versions of the driver, The first driver had a square outline to his arms on the steering wheel as did the second one which also had infill under his right arm, The third driver also had the infill but his arms were in a V across the steering wheel.
There was also three different ways that the bucket was hinged to the body, The first had studs on the pivot posts which located into holes in the bottom of the bucket, This was not a very successful way to fit the bucket so the bucket can quite often be missing from this variation, Next a bif rivet was used but later this was changed for a regular dome head type axle pin with a rounded end on the later issues.
The dumper was not one of the most popular models although it is not too hard to find so it must have been fairly popular in its day. It was replaced by the 2c Aveling Barford dumper in 1962. The dumper was packaged in 'B' and 'C' type boxes and there are no rare variations to look out for.
