Moko Lesney Matchbox 27c Cadillac Sixty special

The 27c Cadillac Sixty special was introduced in mid 1960 and at the time the miniatures range was not yet restricted to 75 models so pre production models of the Cadillac have been found with the number 76 on the base, Then Lesney decided to limit the range to 75 models so the baseplate had the new number 27 cast on a raised platform over where the number 76 was originally.
The first version of the Caddy was painted metallic green with an off white roof and clear windows, Its baseplate was crimson and its wheels silver, It was enhanced with silver trim to the grille, headlights and both bumpers, the tail lights were trimmed in red.
The metallic green did not stay for long when the model was recoloured to silver grey with a cream roof and clear windows to begin with and later green tinted windows although I have one issue that is unlisted until now that has a pink roof and maroon base.
The model was recoloured again to light metallic lilac which varies in shade which will fade if left in direct sunlight, the roof was recoloured to pink and the windows clear or tinted and the baseplate kept in crimson.
Until now the wheels were always 9 x 20 or 9 x 24 silver plastic but now grey wheels were fitted for a while.
The baseplate was recoloured from crimson to black and this variation can be found with knobbly silver or grey, or finer tread grey or black wheels, Later the rear bumper was no longer silver trimmed and on the last few issues the trim was omitted from the tail lights.
There were three casting modifications to the inside of the bonnet, The first of the metallic green Caddies had a smooth inside to the bonnet and then an arrow shape was cast to the right hand side of the inside of the bonnet, Then towards the end of the metallic lilac & crimson base issue a brace was cast into the right side of the front rivet post, Then when the very last issue was in production a brace was cast inside the bonnet across the bottom edge of the windscreen.
The Cadillac was packaged in 'B', 'C' and 'D' type boxes, It was replaced by the 27d Mercedes 230 SL in 1966.
Two unlisted versions are believed to exist, One has a sky blue baseplate and the other has a metallic brown body similar to the 28c Jaguar MK 10. If you have any information on either of these variations we would like to hear from you.

Updated: 12-08-09, An unlisted variation was recently discovered by Bob Willis, His car has metallic lilac body, pink roof, trim to the front only (trim 3), black baseplate, green windows, bonnet type 3 and 9 x 24 black plastic wheels, It has been added to the variation table as the new number 21.

Updated: 26-10-09, Warren Burdick tells me of an unlisted variation that he has, It is silver with a cream roof, green windows, 9 x 24 black plastic wheels, black baseplate, type 2 trim and type 2 bonnet casting which appears to be a mixture of an older body paired up with a newer baseplate but the model has a very good provenance so has been added to the variation table at number 8.

Updated: 26-10-10, After the tracking down of various metallic brown Cadillacs by members of the forum we can finally add this unusual model to the listing at #9. It has a pink roof, green tinted windows, 9x24 spw, crimson base, type 2 bonnet and type 2 trim, Further research is needed as there may possibly be a second darker metallic brown Cadillac variation in existence. Thanks to all of the forum members who contributed, Also added to the listing at #7 is the as of code 6 but with black baseplate, Thanks to Hugh Stiles from the forum for reminding me to add this one!.

Updated: 01-11-10, Louis (Carb) from the forum has found another variation fitted with the maroon coloured baseplate, It has been added to the table as the new number 10
