Moko Lesney Matchbox 17d Foden Hoveringham tipper



The Lesney model of the Foden tipper joined the Matchbox 1-75 series in 1963,
It was in the livery of the hoveringham gravel company of northamptonshire which was red body & chassis and orange tipper with black hoveringham decals to the sides of the tipper bed,
It was fitted with 11.5 x 45 black plastic wheels on dome head axles with rounded ends,
The early issues had black baseplates and silver trim, Later issues had red baseplates but no trim.

It featured spring suspension to the first and third axles which was sprung by white or green plastic leaf springs mounted above the axles.
The tipper body could be tipped and it pivoted on a regular dome head axle pin, The tipper bed was held in the upright position by a plack plastic block which gripped a pin cast into the tipper bed,

The first modification was to enlarge the tipper block which stopped the tipper bed from being lifted too high,
Next braces were added to the sides of the axle carriers for some extra strength.
Then the hole that the rear axle located through was changed from being an oval hole to a round hole,

Later issues had the suspension removed and a pointed wedge was cast under the front axle,
On the final issue this was altered to a much wider wedge under the front axle.
It was sold in 'D' and 'E' type boxes and it was deleted in 1969 to make way for the 17e horsebox. It is a very common model so it must have been a good seller in its day, There are no rare variations.
