Oh dear! I also had a massive update last night (no less than 26 different files!) I'll have to see whether I can still log on when I get home.

I had 19 updates this morning and it went on forever and I had to reboot three times before I could open a browser. It seems to me that just when my computer is behaving itself, Microsoft come along and mess things up.

That's my evening fully booked then! Thank you, Mr. Gates!

Good that I decided to buy a real computer over 5 years ago.
I still use it without any problems.
It also still looks good !

Once you will discover the advances as many more people seem to learn every day.

Yes, good old Microsoft, screwing things up again, as usual. I have turned off my auto update some time ago, I am simply not interested in what Microsoft are doing anymore!

If someone can get a message back to Nick, tell him to do a 'System Restore' which will put his laptop back to a point before the updates were installed and I would recommend other members try this.

Everything appears to be working! (Does that mean something's gone wrong with the download?)

No, I expect you are one of the lucky ones and while all those downloads have gone to your computer, I doubt all of them have been fully installed, plus so many downloads are so trivial, your best bet is to ignore them, don't use the auto download function, it is best for you to decided what is doawnloaded, so once a Month initiate the download function just to see what they (Microsoft), has collected for you and then choose what you want. All I will say it that make sure your internet security is upto date, but if you don't get this directly from Microsoft (who does?), then switch off the auto update function.

All the downloads have been installed successfully. (It was a restart with no error messages.)
Yes, some of the downloads Microsoft churn out are definitely unnecessary, but many of them serve to plug vulnerabilities in Microsoft software. Failure to install them leaves the PC open to (attack (although I do wonder how many of suggested exploits are really out there in cyberspace and how many are purely theoretical). I'm sure Martin would agree that any security-related updates should be installed as soon as they become available. Not to do so is to run a calculated risk (although I think it's probably only a very small one).

Whew.. Well I'm back, I had to edit the registry to get it working again, no thanks to microsoft as they assume you can start your computer to access the start button, well I could not even get past entering my password to start the laptop.
Thanks to those that were able to help me, It's much appreciated guys. I can't send emails at the moment but I think it is because windows is downloading more xxx updates.
Numi, The USA address, the first time you gave it to me it had a phone number that was partly xxxed out, The second had the full phone number, which one do you want me to use?
Hugh, I already activated the lenstar account.
Thanks again to you all.
