Hello everyone,

I bought a car from someone who had him in possession for 50 years. It's the early dark blue colored pickford transporter with the later coloured dark red trailer bed.
Is it true that this one is very rare? I saw that Torbjörn (Mr.T) was the only one who also had this pickford. Can anyone help me out? I uploaded some pictures so you can see the differences by yourself. (You can also see the pictures of Mr.T on this link http://www.vintagebritishdiecasts.co.uk ... ckford.htm)

Greetings from the Netherlands,

Henk Steenbakker

It's certainly rare, but I wouldn't like to say how rare. (I also have one.)
Looking at your photographs, you seem to have a very noticeable shade difference in the dark blue of the tractor unit and the bogies of the two models. Is it just as pronounced in real life?

Hello Idris,

Your right about the colour difference! But I just have cleaned the on on top with a wet cloth and now they have the exact same colour .
It was just the dust. Thank you for your comment!

This color combination you have shown us Henk is a known Major Pack variation that was found by us in our U.S. stores in the 1960s. They had to have produced a lot of them with that color combination, because they were listed as a variation in Bob Brennen's U.S. (1971) NAMC Lesney Guide. From memory Henk, this was the hardest variation to find of this monster Pickfords Hauler, but was not considered 'Rare' back in the 1960s.
In today's market, that may not be true if demand is high enough to make these colors hard to get. If collectors like Idris and myself have most of these in collections, the supply stays low, and the prices get higher if new collectors have an interest in completing their Major Pack collections. kwakers

I agree pretty much with Dick's comments. Since this is one of my favorite Majors (along with the scraper) I've owned several of this color scheme and never thought any of them as rare. I still have about a dozen of them in that color scheme (beaters saved for restoration) and a couple excellent condition ones with dark blue/dark red sitting right on my desk at the moment.

I guess I should ask a premium if I sell either of the two excellent ones and I guess I've sold several boxed examples at bargain prices if they are to be considered rare. Ya learn something new every day!

Very nice colour variations Henk. I think that there are 4 basic colour variations by M6a Pickfords 200 ton Transporter.
a) dark blue tractor & maroon trailer
b) dark blue tractor & red trailer
c) dark blue tractor & light red trailer
d) light blue tractor & light red trailer
