Hi guys and gals, I have been saving pictures every time I pop into the old Lefora forum and putting them in a 'Lost Property' Folder on my computer, if I just create a section in the Lounge titled 'Lost Property' and post all the pictures in there, you can just pop in whenever you want and re-claim your images.
Is this a good idea, I don't know, what do other members think. Would it be better to put them somewhere in the 'Archive' site created by Martin_avis, (is this possible Martin).
Your thoughts on this will help me decide, thank's,
Work on my archive site has ground to a halt as pressures of work have intruded. I should be able to get back to it in a couple of weeks.
Unfortunately there is no sensible way to link any saved imaged from Lefora to the new archive - at least not the semi-automated way that I am doing it. It would be possible to do it manually, but that would take far longer than anyone is likely to be able to spend.
OK Martin, no probs, I just thought there might be a way of having a folder or something that myself/other members could post any images into, that were saved from Lefora, but cannot be mated back to the respective thread topics, as you may have seen that a lot of image links at Lefora, do not display the correct image and so I have been saving those images, so at least we still have them somewhere, (in a 'Lost Property' folder on my PC at the moment) and it would be handy if this folder was on one of the forums, your 'Archive' or Nick's 'phpBB'.
I would be quite happy to create a 'Lost Property' section in the Lounge on Nick's forum, so anyone can just look into it and save any pictures they reconise or want to use in a thread, it does mean that every time I post an image in there, it will have my avatar and username with it and some members may think that I was the originator of that image and complain at the quality of, or subject matter in the image.
I do see this as an easy way of getting those images back into circulation by doing it this way, but welcome any other ideas.
Good luck with the Archive Site, regards,
GHOSTHUNTER.
There is a bigger problem with that. Pictures take up a lot of space and although Nick has what is billed as 'unlimited' file space in his hosting account, the reality is that no web host really gives unlimited space. There is always small print that covers what they endearingly call 'reasonable use'. As soon as you go over a certain secret limit they do all kinds of nasty things to you. That can range from levying additional hosting charges to pay for the excess, slowing down your bandwidth access, forcing you to transfer to more expensive hosting or banning your account altogether.
We certainly don't want this site getting banned!
That's why posting images via something like Photobucket, or hosting them on your own server and linking to them from here is by far the safest and best option.
Hello Martin, that's a very valid point and has helped me decide what to do with a 'Lost Property' folder.
A large number of images will certainly eat up valuable web space and in the circumstances that ours would be used, a 'Fair Useage' cap or limit would be easily reached and put Nick in a delicate position and that is a NO, NO.
So, on this point alone, I will leave well alone and just keep the 'Lost Property' folder on one of my PC's, I will however inform members that I have done this and if they have lost images from the old forum, I may well have them and can PM it to them.
I don't have any images myself on sites such as 'Photobucket' and the last time I tried to register with that site, it hung for a long while and eventually told me I could not use the e-mail and password I had chosen !!!
If you are still a regular visitor to the old Lefora site and saving as many images as you can, here is a very quick way to save them.
Use the 'Drag-N-Drop' method, where you have the Lefora site running, but minimised to be on the left side of your screen and on the right side of your screen, you have an open folder for any pictures you do / or have saved from the old site.
Just put your cursor on an image, hold down the left click button and slide it across on the touch pad or mouse, into your folder.
In the picture below, you can see exactly how all this looks, on the left side is the Lefora site, with a displayed image, (in this case from Mick's matchbox Superfast casting chatroom), on the right is one of my folders I use for the new forum and right in the middle, is a smaller version of the image you are moving, towards the top left corner is a black 'Forbidden' sign, this is just showing you where you can't put the image, this is perfectly normal and does no harm, forget it.
This tip is also being posted in my 'Photography' and 'Edit your pictures' topics, in the Lounge.
