Hi Dick,
Thought I would add a pic of the tow guides to follow on from your notes while the camera is running hot.
These I have measured as 7.3mm and 6.3mm
The 6.3mm smaller tow guide on my model on the right is on the THICK axle supports but with NO brace on the cross-member but I do not have enough of a sample to know if that small tow guide is only on the earlier of the thick chassis model or all.

yellowfoden wrote:Not sure if I am understanding the "silver with thin axle supports" other than that there is one already listed, or is there something else?
I have not seen a turquoise with thick axle supports but I do have the silver with thin supports without cross-member ridge. This is without tow guide and is not a new variation but is Stannard code 2 NJ2 and Christian 2
Sorry - I should have explained better. Because axle support width isn't mentioned in Nick's guide or Christian's table, it's not clear whether the silver code 2 is thin or thick axle supports without cross-member. Your silver-bodied thin DAF confirms that the thicker chassis / axle supports were introduced after the colour change, so all green bodies should have thin axle supports. I think the chassis order is:
green, thin axle supports, no cross-member brace
silver, thin axle supports, no cross-member brace
silver, thick axle supports, no cross-member brace
silver, thick axle supports, cross-member brace
The tow guide adds another dimension. All my DAF tow guides - including 58c DAF - measure at 7.2 mm, which implies that the wider tow guide is more common.
Thanks for the pictures of the tipper body - I understand now!

Thank You Bert for the excellent front base picture of those two different tow guide widths. As can now be seen easily by everyone, the wider front tow guide is nearly the same width as the dip in the front bumper, which makes that one very easy to spot. It is easy to use that bumper dip to find a narrow tow guide model without any method of measurement, it is in plain view for us in hand or online with a simple base picture from the Seller........Kwakers

With enormous help from Bert (Yellowfoden) I've had a go at a new variation table for the DAF. Needless to say, all the errors are mine, not Bert's!
I understand now that the thin / thick chassis and axle supports were identified by Houghton and Stannard, but both missed the variation Bert has shown with the thick chassis but without the rear chassis brace. Both Kwakers and Bert identify the narrow and wide tow guide, again uncatalogued so far. My observation, based on this and the 58c girder truck, are that the thin guide is uncommon. The other missing variation has the container with a rear bumper, and Kwakers has this with both tow guide widths.
All the guides separate out silver and grey roofs, but put both on every variation except the first two, which shouldn't be silver. As they are easily lost and swapped, I've just indicated that both colours are possible. Both were apparently in use on SF models too.
This table is sure to be wrong. Please tell me where and I'll have another go. Trying to make sense of all this has made me respect Hugh's missing variations work even more!

Thanks Glenn, Bert and Dick for your nice contributions. I have another unlisted variation. It is on the late models with rear brace on the container. It seems that there are two variations of the container with rear brace.
a) variation with the thin inner wall. The container could be tippet by 90°
b) variation with the thicker inner wall. The container could be tipped by 45°

b) grey
c) silver-grey

Thanks, Antonin. I’m intrigued by the narrow thin inner wall. What is the tipper mould number? It seems like a strange modification to make, as castings normal get thicker, not thinner.

It is a pretty strange variation, Glenn. As you have mentioned, casting normal get thicker. I have no logic explanation for it. The tipper has no mould number.

Thanks, Antonin. This morning I examined an SF 47c that was too bad even for my collection. The container tipped to 90 degrees, and had no casting number and prominent ejector rings. Perhaps a new mould was made for some reason? Does your other thick bumper container have a casting number?

Yes, the second variation with thick inner wall has the mould number "1".
