Maidston finds

Post by nickjones »

I went to the Maidstone toyfair on saturday, I got there an hour and a half before the doors opened and it did not seem to be open for early entry and no one was on the door, So I did what any hardcore toy collector would do, I went in, I had a good look around but there did not appear to be anything worth finding but I kept looking,
First purchase was a light blue mini Dinky Triumph Spitfire for only £3 which had opening bonnet & boot (hood & trunk). I think these mini Dinkys are pretty rare and sit well with my 1-75's on the display shelf, I think these are underrated as it is a beautiful model which is let down by the build quality.
Then finally I found something worth finding, a 23b Berkeley Cavalier caravan in metallic green, a near impossible to find variation which has sold in m&b for £1500 at vectis,
So still with a big smile on my face I went back to look at one of the first stalls which was until now covered up, He had a nice selection of SF and a few playworn reg wheels. Almost straight away I spotted a green gloss Ford group 6 without a price label, so I picked it up along with another group 6 super GT and a late issue 24c Silver Shadow in lime-gold with dot dash wheels, I was shocked when the dealer only charged me £1 for the gloss green group 6.
The last purchase was a boxed Corgi Juniors Road Construction Giftset which had a slightly crushed box but was complete with all 7 vehicles in mint condition and 4 workmen figures which I thought was a bargain for only £30.
On leaving I decided that I should really pay my £2 entry fee and then went out to my car to look at my purchases, It was only then that I could see that the Group 6 was a very well done repaint but the metallic lime green Berkeley was the real thing so I was very happy.
So from there I went to Guildford for an all night party........but that is another story!.

Nick, I don't know what the MGB roadster is, but your 'MINI DINKY' is surely the red Ferrari 250 LM on the left, facing the MGB!

Both the MGB and the Ferrari are Mini Dinkys - along with the caravan all wonderful vhtf scores. Emerald repaint on the Group 6 is just the right shade,it has been very well done, nice filler - does it have a plated baseplate?

Black baseplate and minute traces of metallic green under the wheel arches

To say I am very pleased would be an understatement, I have seen one or two at vectis but its the first one I have ever found.
