Interesting 42B Studebaker

Picked this up at the Sunday toy show at Charlie Mack's convention last weekend. The first I've seen where the roof slide is significantly darker than the body of the car.

cool mix of colors...so would this be a case of a batch put aside and then brought out and mixed with other colors being produced at a different time

That is a nice color contrast and I agree with Dan's assessment that different color batches were combined. Generally, it seems there are more models out there with the lighter shaded slides including a slide that has NO color at all (that I have not seen to date).

Really? I've always thought that the captive design of the sliding roof was sufficiently robust that it would be impossible to remove/switch it without breaking something in the process. Perhaps you and Greg could compare notes via PMs in order to establish whether there are any tell-tale marks?
If it is genuine, then there'll be more out there and so another one will turn up in the fullness of time.

The unpainted slide is a catalogued variation but is remarkably elusive. There was what might have been one on Ebay at the start of the year, but the photographs were unclear. An Ebay-mail to the seller failed to provide clarity since he/she/it replied that they did not know enough about Matchbox cars to make a judgement and, furthermore, didn’t want to go to the trouble of taking an additional photograph for me!

You would be surprised how many "sellers" on Ebay fail to reply to questions or decline to provide additional photographs. It makes you wonder why they bothered putting up a listing in the first place!

I'm not saying that the slider and the body colors don't come mismatched, as they often did. We've also seen parts mismatched in the time line of specific models and we know that's due to how Lesney stored parts for assembly. I'm just mentioning that it is possible for anyone to combine these parts after the fact and that no premium or special significance should be placed on the combination of these particular parts.
