What percentage of value do you think a box adds to a model. I am sure a lot depends on the box variation and condition but what do you think a models value increases by, with a near mint box common for that model.

Personally I think the model is naked without its box...........that said i have hundreds of loose models, all looking for an original box!

My opinion would be if you can afford to collect mint models in their original boxes then that is probably best practise, but should not stop you buying that loose model to enhance your collection.

With regards the value of the boxed model.........Certainly it will always ensure a premium over an unboxed example but can be a difficult one to quantify as some boxes are worth many times the value of the model they enclose.

I think the box is 40% to 60% of the value for a common model in a common box.

I agree Nick. I mostly have a box for every model which enhances the value to me. I don't try to have a box for each variant of a model as that would lead to divorce. But I do love the boxes and box art and think it is an important part of the hobby.

I collect the models. If it comes with a box, that's a plus, but I would never pass up a nice model.

i value the box as much as the model...its art which contains a piece of art that is the model

The box is generally harder to obtain than the model so unless either is a rare variation the box should always be worth as much as the model and probably more as we can see when empty boxes are sold off!

Tinman, I totally agree as I have been able to get some deals on un-boxed items that would have normally garnered a premium had they had the original box. To me a nice models out weighs the nice box. If I see three identical models and one is $75 without a box or a repro, and another for $125 with a worn box, or a $200 model with a nm/m box then I go with that one.

I agree with Mick on boxes even on some common models the empty box seems to fetch more than the model.

But then I am also a very keen box collector, and try to collect the box that goes with a particular model, as these pictures show, if they are the very last casting of a model, then I assume it must go with the last issue box. Like the last casting of 22c should be in the 22c "F" box, and this applies with most models.











Like this model 66a with SPW, being the last issue so must go in the "D" box the last issued box for this model.

Though it seems to be getting much harder to get even a fairly mint common genuine box.

Also I got most of my expensive boxes before all the hype was on the boxes as it is today.
