white mudguards and running board

Im just reading a book and it says that in war times the mudguards and running boards on cars were painted white ,(quote)
In accordance with war-time regulations

Due to the blackout, these parts of vehicles were highlighted as white could be seen better in reduced visibility.

My mother still has an pre-war bicycle - bought in the 1970s - with a white-painted section on the back mudguard. She used it well into the 1980s, though I don’t suppose it’s been out of the garage for 30 years.

Sorry - not until lockdown is lifted - they’re 200 miles away and we haven’t been able to visit since October.
