White Rust, it's evil. Story of a K12a

I'm looking over some models in the beater box and I see this Kingsize wrecker. It's not looking so good and it's obviously worse than when I put it in the box. I decided it was time to stop the problem and fix the truck. I begin to take it apart and I decided to document how bad it had become, the white rust is literally pushing the paint and decals off the model. It even followed the boom down through the body and was affecting the bottom side of the model.

I got so involved in cleaning up the parts of the truck, I forgot to document the process. Basically it involved stripping off all of the paint and wire brushing all of the parts down to clean bare metal. Next I washed all the parts and then polished them some more with the wire brush on the Dremel. When everything was clean and polished, I coated the parts with etching primer and gave them the top coat. The window insert responded well to being polished. The base of the model was in surprisingly good condition, I just cleaned it up a bit, polished the axles, cleaned the hubs and tires and put it all back together. What an amazing difference and that should end the problem with the white rust.

Well done as usual - I like it.

Had a go at this model myself, one was my own from childhood (suffering badly from the 'white rust'),the other i picked up in a job lot (there were two,so i managed to cobble 1 decent one together).
I have gone for a darker shade of green, and am awaiting hooks, and decals from Steve Flowers.
Incidentally, the roof signs are different, one cast in,the other a separate part with two lights!

Another amazing transformation from "white rust" to factory fresh.
Attached is a picture of a similar model the folks at Lesney were working on back in the sixties.

A lot of play value there and someone somewhere must still have it.

Great prototype! I see parts from models already in production, so interesting how they reused things. Thanks for sharing the photo (and the model) with us.

I like them both, looking good!

If Steve starts taking and filling orders again, please post an announcement here on the forum. I can't be the only one running out of stuff and needs to re-order a bunch of stuff.
