I noticed we mention as wheel size 12.5 by 40 black plastic but to my idea it should be 12.5 by 30 black plastic.

52a Maserati 4CLT.1948 possible wheel variation change

Hello Nick and all other forum members,

52a Maserati 4CLT. 12.0mm x 30 and 12.5mm x 30 BPW

As discussed last week here are some images of the 52a Maserati 4CLT with the 12.0mm black plastic wheels with extended hub ( boss extension or shoulder on hub ) on the Red version with dome and crimped axles

In the close up images showing the detail you can see the 12.0mm diameter has a narrow centre tread measuring 1.0mm wide and the 12.5mm diameter quite a distinct pointed centre tread measures 1.8mm wide.

With the vernier the unlisted 12.0mm x30 ( on the crimped axle) actually measure 11.98mm to 12.05 in diameter
( measuring different wheels) and my version with dome and riveted axle ( rounded small end ) measure 12.55 to 12.65mm.

I look forward to hearing if any other forum members have the 12.5 x 30 with the wide centre tread on the 52a or if they have the 12.0mm x 30 with narrow centre tread.( Currently listed as 12.5mm x 30)

This is the same type bpw that is listed as 12.5 x 30 on 54a Saracen Personnel Carrier, 61a Ferret Scout Car and 67a Saladin Armoured Car 6x6 where both types of profiles are also found.

I quite like this type of fine detail on all Lesney models.
I am thinking that both these different profiles have long been considered 12.5 x 30 and a case where conversions have been rounded up or down.

That's going to be a tricky one to spot on Ebay!

I do measure all wheel with the same equipment as show inn the picture (don't know the english word).

Any wheel I measured so far on regular has a deviation of anything between +/- .5 mm Sometimes when a kid played with it wheels are smaller of course, but I have the same problem with new (boxed) models too. I think it a mass product and depending of the production process those deviation can be explained?

The older Lesney toys were made in imperial measurements, feet and inches, Mike Stannard converted the wheel sizes to metric in his well known guide so the measurements are in the nearest metric conversion to .5 mm which is not very exact.
