Quick question re 71b Gladiator

Post by toysnz »

Folks... are we treating the 71b WITHOUT silver trim as a negative variation... checking through mine today, I noted I have a white interior, no patent number, straight door frame, plastic spring version.

Hi Ian,

What code are you suggesting this is (is it red or orange/red), i.e. is it early or late?

Based on box art I would say the intention was to silver trim all models and therefore count as a negative variation. However I have come across models like yours both early and late. In my own personal catalogue I have coded the very last issue as genuine no trim.

However there are several variations not listed by Stannard or Nick that have mask spray silver trim to the grille and headlights but NOT to the bumper. As the placement or position of the silver trim to the grille and headlights is accurately positioned on these I would suggest the silver trim to grille and lights but not bumper are a deliberate variation.

Geofrey Leake in his catalogue listing has a slight variation to this with silver painted grille, with & without silver painted headlights & bumper.

Hugh has documented that the NAMC catalogue has a late model with no trim that he suggests could fit into the codes at the end.

I also remember seeing a no trim version elsewhere on the forum and if found it would be interesting to see which code.

Hope that helps Ian.

Further to the above I have now found the other 71b that looks to have no trim especially on the grille but perhaps Glenn can confirm. This is also a green interior early version so could be a no trim at the start of the models life.

Bert... thanks foi rthe response.

To all intents and purposes it is a Stannard 71-b-2 (also Nick's code 71-b-2) apart from the missing silver trim - red exterior, white interior, no patent number, straight door frames, plastic springs.

Bert knows my collection better than I do, even though he's on the other side of the world! My green-interior Jeep looks like it's without trim, but I think the mask was clogged. There's a small line of silver right at the bottom of the radiator, but nothing on the lights. Pictures later.

We regularly see models lacking their trim.
Based solely on personal observation, I believe these fall into two distinct categories:
1)'end of model' issues: there seem to be an awful lot of final variation code models without trim
2) other variation codes: these occur far less frequently than the first category, but seem to be specific variation codes. It therefore seems likely that they represent some kind of production issue (such as shortage of silver paint, or blocked mask), rather than simple oversight. They are therefore deliberate negative variations rather than errors.

Here's a picture showing the front of that green-interiored 71b. At this magnification the silver along the base of the grille is more obvious, and there also seems to be some silver in the grooves. There is none on the headlights. The 71b on the left has been mine for nearly 50 years, though it was a jumble sale purchase and I wasn't the first owner. Despite lots of happy play, it still retains a silver grille and headlights.

The two variants here, coded with Nick's table, are:

code 1 - green interior, 11x45 wheels, no patent

code 8 - white interior, 10x36 wheels, patent, no bonnet posts, plastic door springs (and no doors!)

Note - now with added JPEG for those who can't see the TIFF.
