With me being new to collecting Lesley Matchbox, would a kind forum member explain to me the difference between black tyres and grey tyres on certain models.

First of all, welcome to the Forum. if you do not understand something, please do not be afraid to ask. Even the most experienced of us started with no knowledge whatsoever, and I think we would all admit to still learning, no matter how long we have been collecting.
I do wonder whether when you refer to tyres, you actually mean wheels. Assuming that you do, then I would would agree that grey plastic wheels (usually abbreviated to GPW) are less common than black plastic wheels (BPW). However, having said that, some models are seldom found with GPW whilst others are found with them more frequently. In addition, there are shades of GPW, light and dark being commonly acknowledged, but a mid-shade also being known.
if you are actually referring to tyres, then I would also agree that grey ones are significantly less common than black but, unless the tyres in question are model-specific, then it is not worth paying a premium since they could easily have been swapped. I am not aware of any shade differences amongst grey tyres.

Welcome to the forum Kevin and what a great name!
The picture below shows three distinct shades of the GPW as used on the regular wheel #44A Rolls-Royce. The fact this model was a common and popular model suggests the three shades should also be found on other models in the range.
The next picture shows two distinct shades of grey tyres as used on the Y-15 Rolls-Royce from the Models of Yesteryear range.
Because these are tyres seperate to the wheel rim it is possible to swap them from model to model so you may find them on models that did not have have them when new from the Lesney factory.

One model showing Silver Plastic Wheels (SPW) & Grey Plastic Wheels (GPW) & Black Plastic Wheels (BPW)
The Rolls_Royce With Grey Tyers & Black Tyers.
The different colour wheels make some models dearer than others on the same model, also the # of treads can make a difference.
