RW 59b SPW Ford Fairlane Fire Chief

Post by eburak »

Hello all,

I purchased this model from a well known collector. But not sure if the wheels are swapped or not. Especially rounded ends looks very suspicious to me. I will post the images with a BPW model to compare. I also post some magnified images of rounded axles.

Any comment will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Pictures are too big. I will try to resize them.

Yes they are too big but for this instance are helpful and my initial first impression is that the axle-ends look fine but but considering the model's time-line, would / could SPW's find their way onto this model.

I'm not at all sure about the axle ends, but it's hard to say from these pictures - more images with the small ends of the axles in focus would really help to show whether they're round, have the typical dimple, and whether there's any damage to the wheels.

Nick's listing also suggests that the back bumper should be trimmed in silver. I don't have a silver-wheeled 59b but I do have a grey-wheeled one and the trim is on and under the bumper. This one is definitely untrimmed at the rear, which could make it an unknown variation, or suggest a wheel-swap.

Dear Dr. Jeep I am not sure how can I get better pictures. First 4 pictures are taken under professional magnifier. First two from BPW model, third and fourth pictures from SPW one showing small/rounded/riveted ends of the axles.

You are absolutely right. I posted same pictures to a Facebook group. They also commented looks original. Nick Jones himself also commented it is OK. And I asked him the same question. He commented " It could be an unlisted variation I guess".

Thanks again,

Perhaps we should be looking closely at the baseplate rivet with a view to a possible baseplate swap.

Are these pictures enough or should I take more pictures?

I have resized and enhanced the colour cast on the first four images of the axle-ends.

here's what I see:

This wheel looks quite worn compared to the rest of the model. The end of the axle might be too small.

This wheel looks like it might be damaged and the axle end looks a little flat.

This rivet looks too flat - typically the rivets are too short and barely flared at all.

I think it's odd that the rivets are flat and the ends of the axles might look strange too - though Ghosthunter's resizing makes them look fine.
