The Jaguar E type has always been one my favorite cars of all time, and the Matchbox also.

I have two E-types I purchased on E-bay , both for $7 US, including shipping. I think that was reasonable. The photos show the two I purchased, and on the left is my E-Type from my childhood collection, which I am not touching.

I am think about using Spectraflame red for one, and trying my hand at airbrushing with lacquers, and bring it back to original. Or try a red from spray can from the Automotive shop.

The second I was planning on painting to match 9600 HP , the prototype of the E-Type. I have to find the right metallic grey to match 9600 HPs colors. I can make the decals for the plate on the front and the GB in the rear on a vinyl laser printer.

I experimented for a bit to try and duplicate the Lesney finish on the XKE. Like Lesney, I had to do a two coat, two part paint process using a base coat and a top coat.

I don't think you will be able to duplicate the finish without doing a base coat and a top coat (at least I never could).

One of these is Lesney's paint and the other is my own two step paint process.


The one below received new tires, a new windscreen and new paint.



British Racing Green is a good single application color. I made one into a rag top. This was my very first custom matchbox model and was done some 30 years ago.

That option sounds prohibitively expensive for one or even two cars. Especially if you are trying that product for the first time.

These are be-YOU-tee-ful! I just finished an e-type, but it doesn't look anything near as nice as these!

I restored two of the E types. One in the color of 9600 HP. The photo of the three, my childhood E type is shown with the two painted. I used Humbrol enamels, thinned with spirits and sprayed in a syphon airbrush. Its a cheap $8 airbrush.

You should add a clear gloss top coat to the graphite one.
