Corgi Cubs

Corgi Cubs were an interesting but short lived line of sturdy pre-scool age kids toys that Mettoy produced. After their run as Corgi Cubs, Mettoy continued to produce them for Mothercare stores in the UK with the Corgi branding removed. This led to their being lots of undocumented variations.

The photos show some of the models that I have/had in my collection. Obviously I have a soft spot for vans. This is just the tip of the iceberg of the various models produced.

Wonder why 'Corgi Cubs' was chosen instead of ''My First Corgis''. Two similar product ranges were already using the ''My First''' tag line somewhere by Sony and indeed Matchbox.

''My First Sony'' = 1988 onwards.
''My First Matchbox'' = 1989 onwards.

Corgi Cubs came out in the 1970s, a lot earlier than My First Matchbox.

I remember having the police car when I was young but I didn't like it very much. Its simplicity didn't compare well to other toy cars I had at that time.

Just curious. That series with the Teddy Bear decals. Butcher, Fireman, Grocer etc.
I've never seen them in original packaging.
I'm guessing they were sold loose?
Promotional give aways perhaps?

Anyone know?

In Bill's first picture above, the Telephone Van is in an original blister based box. I have not seen any other type of packaging for this series but that does not mean other designs do not exist. I am sure Bill will enlighten us :D

Thanks Ghosthunter,

I have found a quite a few.

Mostly in the 1976 issue clear blister packs.

4 pack boxed set is from 1977 (I've also seen a 6 pack.)

The remaining boxes are 1981 issues. (I'm guessing they were export only)

But that Teddy Bear series has always puzzled me as I've never seen them packaged.

Quite an assortment and I would imagine now quite collectible with that 4 pack set being the gem I reckon, as there can not be that many of those left in existance.

I wonder how they would have handled a Rolls-Royce for this series, that would be a winner with me... :D

The above photo covers the Corgi packaging quite well. Only the Mothercare versions remain, although I don't have any photos of that packaging in my collection.

Note that there are many known graphics variations on a number of the models.

Thanks Bill.
So they're from a "Mothercare" range.
That's one step closer to finding out how they were packaged.
