Lincoln continental tv

Hi
I have acquired a corgi 262 Lincoln continental. It's in reasonable play worn condition. Undneath the battery cover is in place and I have got hold of a replacement bulb and can confirm it works.
My problem is that however I try and set up the fitting of the battery case I cannot fathom out how to get the bulb to light up. I know it has to do with the lever pushing the plunger in to the bottom of the bulb. I believe the side of the bulb touches the + end of the battery and the point on the chassis should touch the bottom end of the battery with the plunger completing the circuit and even taking into account some wear I can't see how the plunger could ever had made contact with the bottom of the bulb
Any ideas, am I getting this totally wrong, and is there a work round without having loads of wires hanging around.
I'm also short of pictures for the to screen. Will any 'plastic' picture work?
Many thanks
