Y16 Mercedes Benz SS with purple wheels

Hi all,

First time poster but have been reading the forum with interest as I dig a bit deeper into my dad's collection. He died 13 years ago and I inherited 400+ models collected over 35 years. This one has confused me a bit and I can't remember any of dad's stories about it.

It is a Y16 1928 Mercedes Benz SS in white, issue 11 I believe. It doesn't have a box. The interesting/confusing thing is that two of the wheels have light purple rims, one on driver's rear, the other passenger front. Is this a dodgy fake/fix? Or a random production error? The axles on those wheels might be slightly smaller, hard to tell. Any thoughts/info/ideas greatly appreciated. Photos are below. Thanks in advance.

Hello Gav, welcome to the forum.

I have resized your images for better viewing.

The model shown in your pictures displays a common fault with that type of tyre and can be found on many examples of the white Mercedes. It can also be found on other 'MOY' models with the thin white line where again it has turned a purple-lilac colour.

I think it was a bad batch of paint they used for the white lineing on a number of the models in the post 1979 range.

There is no monetary gain for models with these tyres as they are seen as factory errors!

Ghosthunter.
