Tax and MOT exempt cars, do you own one?

From May 2018, most cars over 40 Years old will be exempt from the road fund licence and will not need to have an MOT check. This means 'GEMMA' my 1977 Rolls-Royce, will be free to wonder around Britains roads as She pleases!

Many states in the USA have similar rules. My two vintage Mustangs are also exempt from yearly license fees and emissions tests.

I have read that an owner of an over 40 year old car has to keep it in a roadworthy condition. Should anything drastic happen like accident or similar how do you prove your car was in a roadworthy condition? Here in Germany there is an alternative to the more common “H” registration,(still needs to be tested) which is the “07” number plate. Interchangeable for all vehicles listed and no test required. I opted away from this mainly for the reason that at the day of the test my vehicle was considered roadworthy which does help if necessary. Testing in Germany is strict and is valid for two years.
I would think it is very difficult to prove roadworthyness whiteout some sort of backup.

EVERY driver is responsible for his car being roadworthy. Not only owners of 40+ year old cars.
