Recently picked up this bare casting of the Pontiac, comparing to a standard model the casting has quite a few differences and looks like they were trying to create steering. Does anyone have any info on this model, maybe early models had steering and maybe also had the number cast on the base. Not something I normally collect but I do like unused castings , any help would be much appreciated. Jason

Now that is interesting. Totally different base, looks like steering as you say. Not one I've seen before, but I don't collect these as I stop at 1964. Any idea where it came from?

The seller said they came with some mold,s but apart from that I have not been able to get any other information.
Wondering if they were going to mount in a plastic display box as well, this would account for the holes in the base.

Hi Jason,
Had a good look through the info I have and I can't find any reference to steering on this one. The 173 on the base was presumably blanked when the 251 RCMP car used the same base, both came out '69 anyway. The theory on the hard plastic case is good too, as the Cadillac Eldorado also in 69 came in one, but the Pontiac never did so far as I can see. The first casting had the retractable aerials too, so it seems to match up.

Thanks for checking Chris, just wondering if anyone has a Cadillac Eldorado plastic case. Would like to know the hole centres to see if its the same as the Pontiac base, might make a nice display case.

Dinky Toys introduced Four models in June 1969 fitted with the new low-friction 'SPEEDWHEELS' the Pontiac was one of them and Jason's find of that baseplate casting shows the model was fairly close to being produced with the old solid axle and wheel combination being used by Dinky at this time. The interior design of the base follows very close the bases from #152 and #158 (both Rolls-Royce models), in as much as basic steering and the fitting of the model to a Yellow plastic plynth base with an all clear plastic top (again the same as the Rolls-Royce and many more Dinky models from this period).

I would consider those Pontiac castings as a significant find, well done Jason, still on form for finding such rare items.

Finally got the body and base in a small display case using the base holes. Not sure now where to put it, just no space anywhere. J
