Help needed indetifying some models

Hi folks,

My dad has entrusted me in selling his childhood Dinky toys. Other than deciding between where to sell them and as a whole or individually, I'm struggling to indentify a lot of them.

The boxed ones aren't a problem, but I can't identify a lot of the cars. I've seen what I think is a complete catalogue, but can't see them in there. Can anyone point me in the direction of one if it at all exists?

I'm not sure that's true, Alex. I think we've seen other newbies post photo-based queries without any issues.
My own feeling is that this is either an issue with the links not being correct or a problem with the photo host. I've already e-mailed Fordy81 warning him there's an issue and asking him to look into the problem. (Could it perhaps be a permissions issue, something like a private folder?)

Hi there,
There are some really nice models there, some really quite rare and valuable. They all look to be in the Pre 1950 era, and some look Pre War though it's hard to tell without detailed pictures. I would not sell them as a single lot, as you will not get anywhere near what you will get individually. Maybe an Auction house would be the way to go if you didn't want to split them up?
What I can do is give you a number and model name for each of the ones you've shown which should help you list them.
I'll try to get it done over the weekend. I might need close up shots of some for further info.
The cars can be very difficult to ID from a catalogue as they do pretty much look alike.

The final picture has 2 small cars that I don't know, the rest are mostly Dinky signs / bits and pieces.
I am going to guess they are all postwar, but need the pictures listed above to tell.

There is some very nice stuff here, how many are there in total?

Now the problem with the photographs has been resolved, I can see that there is a good selection of vehicles, all of which look to be in good to near mint connection. I'm sure that you will have no problem finding willing buyers should you wish to go down that path.

My dad says a lot of them were pre-war.

Picture 6, all of those come in boxes, and the boxes themselves are in fantastic condition, the rest don't. But apparently they never had boxes. Several used to come in one box and the shopkeeper would take one out of that.

Is eBay a good place to sell? I imagine most collectors will be watching it?

Ebay has its place and is certainly good for selling odds and ends and for getting money quickly. However, in this case we are talking about a collection, and it there is a significant pre-war component, then I would have thought that a specialist auction house would be more appropriate, e.g Vectis (http://www.vectis.co.uk/Page/Index.aspx), who will give you good coverage and get you top prices, albeit with a hefty commission. Alternatively, there’s SAS (http://www.specialauctionservices.com/a ... lendar.php). Lacy, Scott, Knight (http://www.lskauctioncentre.co.uk/) are also carving out a bit of a reputation for toy auctions. (I think a good auction house with a reputation for quality collectors’ toy sales will always achieve a better price than Ebay. Also, you do not need to worry about fraudsters and loss/damage in the post.

Glad to help, as Idris says I really would not go down the Ebay route with these. The fees alone on these would be very expensive, and there are real issues with none payers too. An auction house would be really happy to handle these for you as there is significant value there.

http://www.astonsauctioneers.co.uk are local here, and seem very good, though I've never sold through them.

Have a look at the Pre War vs Post War sticky at the top of the Dinky Toy area here, it should help to clear up a few issues. I can't tell for sure if a model is Pre War without really close up photos. The price difference between the same models made in 1940 and in 1945 are VERY large in favour of the Pre War model, so please do check.
