Little-Known 51c Variation
Little-Known 51c Variation
Lot 5147 of the recent Wally Walters Vectis auction (hammer price £400 excl. buyer's premium) highlighted a little-known variation of the 'Douglas' label. Usually found in orange on white, and occasionally in black on white, very occasionally it is found in red on white. This is my example...
...and I can vouch that the printing is very definitely red rather than orange.

Very Nice Hugh, and as you say, a little known variation that is still new to me...... Dick

Please use a web hosting site (like photobucket) to store pictures so you can post them here, using attachments makes it hard to view the pictures when you have to scroll to see them. Seeing comparisons of models is hard to see with attachments too.

New to me too - never seen that before. Another one goes onto the list...which seems to get longer rather than shorter these days!

Are we sure it's not a reproduction or code 3?
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."
Re: Little-Known 51c Variation
No, but the fact that there is now documentary evidence for both a playworn and a mint example provides a degree of confidence (c.f. black and white label version). In addition, the labels on mine have all the scuffs and dents you would expect given the general condition of the model.Tinman wrote:Are we sure it's not a reproduction or code 3?
I'm also heartened by the fact that the one in the recent Vectis sale went for so much and had a high estimate, indicating that a number of other collectors also believe this to be a genuine variation.

I have just checked the labels with a 15x magnifying glass and can report that, apart from the colour, they appear to be identical in every way to the standard orange version.Idris wrote:No, but the fact that there is now documentary evidence for both a playworn and a mint example provides a degree of confidence (c.f. black and white label version). idris...a casting variation was found to have thin axle pivots...does yours have thick or thin pivots?
if it has thin pivots and the red label...could be an early trial model...anyone agree?

'Thin' is the answer.
