No 53 Mercedes 220 se paintwork

Hi everyone

I've been looking at a lot of different examples of this model and was wondering if anyone knows why it seems so prone to paint flaking/chipping then any other model I can think of from this series...sorry if it sounds a daft question but I am fairly new to collecting and I've been looking at buying a couple of them for my collection.

I really don't think this model has held up worse than any other ... it just gets played with and played with (and played with).

Hello Lee, as Joe (tinman) says they are not worse than any other model, after all they were issued over 50 odd years ago.
So most of them would have seen a lot of play wear, most models on ebay show play wear mostly the regular wheel models more so the earlier ones.
Being an older collector so when I started mint or near mint could be found, here are my 53b models I have had most of them along time when a lot of models were available.

The only one I am still after is the Maroon model with 9 x 20 Silver Plastic Wheels cannot find it in any condition

I have one with 8.5 x 24 silver plastic wheels. It's unlisted and the wheels are clearly 8.5 and not 9mm.

I also have an odd wheeled early 53B Mercedes with a maroon body, no patent number and without ribs inside the bonnet interior. This model has unlisted Gray Plastic 10X24 wheels on it, not the usual 9X24. As Joe has said about his odd model, I have also measured all 4 wheels on this early model very closely several times, and they all measure 10mm. kwakers

Hello Joe, you will have to stop coming up with these unlisted wheel variations. After reading your post I went a checked my models, I found that my one had the SPW one with 8.5 x 24 tread on all four wheels. So now I need the normal one with SPW 9 x 24 so fascinating these little models.

Sorry LOL, just for the record mine is maroon with 8.5 x 24

This model continues be the one where it seems the greatest number of sizes, tread count and color can be found.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your replies and I guess it is what Tinman has mentioned then about it been a popular model to play with and to be fair even now if regular wheels models was to land on the shop shelves and I was a young lad it would be definitely one I would be drawn to buy and play with.

And hi there George I'm definitely a little jealous of your excellent looking examples there, thanks for posting the photo.
