Y6a Osram Query

Post by Idris »

I noticed that Graham (Rocketron) recently had a Y6a Osram in pale blue up for auction. However, when reading the description, I was surprised to see a disclaimer stating that it might be a sunfade from the more normal grey, and indeed, Graham (very correctly) pointed out that there was a slight colour mismatch between the top and sides of the model, and the base which could have been said to have a greyish hue in the various nooks and crannies.
Does this sunfade idea have any support amongst Yesteryear collectors? If so, does this mean that there are actually two different pale blue Y6a, one a genuine factory issue and one merely a sunfade?

Light grey models fade to blue with exposure to sunlight. A lot of these early YY's change colour like this. Y5-1 Bentley's fade to blue, as do the light green/chartreuse Y3 Benz. Pale yellow Spyker's fade to cream. Any number of models like this can be found on E-Bay. Light blue Osram models have always generated a lot of discussion and differing opinion's. I examined the model in question on two occasions, and my opinion was that it was a faded grey one. Graham agreed, hence the rider in his sale posting. It is then up to the buyer to make his/her own decision. I have examined several of these so-called light blue Osram models, and have yet to find one I would open my wallet for. Similarly with the so-called cream Spyker.

First one I bought was a sunfade and could clearly be seen in the underside of the cab roof. The second one I have is definitely blue as a piece of the brittle decal came away when I was cleaning it and matching blue was underneath so I would say yes there are blue genuine and blue sunfades.

...and then there are "collectors" who would pay 190gbp for a repaint.Seller specifies so.

Please note I am not 100% sure about this model, I think it's a restoration, therefore I am listing it accordingly.
