Hi All, As some of you may know there are some very large collections coming to the market, some with over 4,000 pieces in. What do some of our members think, will it crash the market or boost it up. Speaking to an auctioneer yesterday he told me that there are so many lead soldiers coming into the market that the prices have really fallen. My view on matchbox is there are very few rare ones about, this may keep up their price & we all know that the bottom end of the market is very hard now. Your views please Pete.

For the collectors market it's a good thing , if large amounts of good quality models become available and make it more affordable to those on tighter budgets that's good , hopefully stimulating an of late stagnant market as it filters through
For the traders and investors amongst us maybe not so good as short term values could be affected but I think settle back after a while

What normally crashes the market is too many of the same thing. Put my collection of 'Yesteryear' Rolls-Royce models to auction and after a bit of interest as to why so many of the same thing have appeared, there will be a few sales then stagnation. To the casual collector he does not know what is hiding within the collection. To the specialist collector (far fewer of them), he has done his homework and will pick out the odd Two or Three variations he wants.
If a collector is still in control of their collection, the best way is private, model club, toy fair/dealer and then ebay to dispose of it, but if the collection is being disposed of by immediate Family, chances are they just go to the net, Google selling Matchbox models, and find ebay and the bigger auction houses.
If too many big collections come onto the market around the same time it confuses the collector, which one should he get involved with, especially if funds are tight.
Matchbox as a brand name will still create interest among collectors, probably close to nudging Dinky of the top spot for collectability because of the variations and more prototype models being discovered.
Many of the rare ones are still in private collections, but equally there are still enough out there slowly surfacing to the market often hiding in collections without the owner realising the status of the model(s). Even when collections go to the various auction houses, rare (there's that bloody word again!), models are not always identified by their experts and so they can be got for a good price, the obvious rare models will be premiumed priced.
We as a forum with valuable information tied to the specific model brands we collect are the 'Middle Men' among all this and could be a valuable tool for the collector to gain knowledge of models he is hoping to buy at auction. I am sure we have helped in this respect in the past and I hope we can be helpful again in the future.

Any clue as to when these auctions will surface and which auction houses will be holding them? Just curious for my own sake.

FYI: My understanding is that we are now allowed to post links to auctions of
major collections.

Haven't we had this discussion before when the Geoffrey Leake auction was posted?

Nick more or less said it was OK to be doing this, so essentially the answer is yes.

Hi All, as you may have guessed the auction house is Vectis. They have a five day auction from a deceased man in Spain. I understand there are only a few matchbox. It will be a great auction if you are into Dinkys & Corgis Pete.
