K-11 A Fordson Tractor Variation?

Post by oldfart »

While cataloging my King Size models I noticed that the K-11 A Fordson Tractor in the D box had metal hubs. The trailer had orange plastic hubs. I am under the assumption that the K-11 A Fordson Tractor only came with orange and red plastic hubs. Is this something I missed or is it a new variation?

I think I have a vague memory of a K11a on Lefora with metal hubs (but I could be wrong). Either way, the box art reflects what the artist saw, so we know that at least some pre-production versions had metal hubs.

(Thinking about this a bit more, it could have been a trailer with metal wheels. Time for Ghosty to go exploring once again perhaps?)

Hello James and Hugh and all,

I think this is a case where the King Size series have yet to be put into a variation table format on a web site or in printed book form. From time to time these variations have come up but as we have found with online data it also disappears again. I think about 5 forum members have indicated they have K11a metal hub versions.

When the K11a Fordson and trailer was first produced it was known to have silver hubs.(suggested pre-pro)

The coloured metal hubs you speak of may be same as used on the K4 McCormick International B-250. If you have the metal hub version of the K4a you will see they are the same as the K11a.
If you have a metal hub K4 and a metal hub K11 perhaps you can measure as per note below.

It is also possible that some of these sold by auction houses have not been accurately described given it takes a real close look to be able to spot the difference between the metal and plastic online.

When this K11a model was discussed on the Lefora forum it became confusing because another kingsize models was entered into the discussion plus with wheels, hubs and tyres description confusion.
I felt it was important to save some of this information in particular the variation table compiled by Jason. More detail was being added by Antonin and not long after that forum closed and the new VBD started.
As we know a lot of the photo links either do not work or send you to a wrong photo or have duplicated photos. This makes research complicated.

Here is the variation listing as of July 2013 thanks to Jason. (unedited)

Here are the hub size diameter outside rim as measured by Bert
Metal 11.5 and plastic 10.7mm front hub
Metal 16.9 and plastic 15.0mm rear hub

James
I like your photos in particular the one showing the four models with a view of the base highlighting the varying degree of rivet finish.

Another interesting feature of this model is that many of the steering wheels were damaged during the tumbling and assembly process.

Hook profiles also differ on the tractor. ( also noted by Matchboxfreak Kurt on 27 May 2014 with this forum)

I am sure when Antonin reads this he will reinstate his photos with more detail along with new finds in his model farm. :D

Hope this helps
Bert

I have grabbed that K11 thread from 'Lefora' and will post here as soon as possible.

Yes I understand, as I have been a member of several forums that had very valuable information only to have that information disappear forever. So glad that some people such as yourself had the foresight to save that info.

I never recorded any of the King Size variation info from the previous forums but am in the process of trying to save as much of that info as I can find for my own records. I wish someone would publish an E-book just on King Size model variations. I would certainly purchase a copy. As for now I have been enjoying the info "Charliep" has been posting as well as the reference information on this forum. Tip of the hat to Nick Jones for his work, as well as "Matchboxpat" for his King Size box reference.

Thanks "yellowfoden" for the great info on the K-11 a. I am your faithful servant forever. :D
Thanks,

Oldfart

K11 Fordson Tractor and Farm Trailer

Post by charliep »

K11 Fordson Tractor - Issued in 1963.
Sorry for the redundancy, I lost my work while attaching it to the other K11 thread so I started another.
These are the ones I found so far. None had metal hubs as far as I can tell, perhaps someone know of a way to help simplify this.
The silver steering variations all came with round tow hooks.
K11 Fordson Tractor
1. Silver steering wheels/Orange plastic hubs/round tow hook
2. Silver steering wheel/Dk orange plastic hubs/round tow hook
3. Blue steering wheel/Orange plastic hubs/round tow hook
4. Blue steering wheel/red plastic hubs/round tow hook
5. Blue steering wheel/dk red plastic hubs/round tow hook
6. Blue steering wheel/Orange plastic hubs/square tow hook

Thanks "Ghosthunter"!

After reading I went back and checked the K-11a trailers that I have. Seems that the "No Matchbox" is rather common but the "Matchbox" labeled version came on only with the later versions. (Painted steering wheel version)

Also appears that the grey hydrosleeve is common as well on the earlier models and the black hydrosleeve is only on the later models. (Painted steering wheel version).

Although I am not concerned with value is good to find so many variations on a model that I thought only had a couple of variations. But I am still missing the square hook version. :(

BTW Now I got a mess of wheels to sort out and I'm missing two that I had before.
