Two Corgi models of 1961 Oldsmobile Super 88's and a smaller scale Husky model of the Pirahna car.
The Oldsmobile Super 88 models were released by Corgi in 1962 as a black and white Sheriff's car (#237) and a mauve and white civilian car (#235), both with red interiors. Those two models were withdrawn in 1966 when the tooling was altered to produce these Man from U.N.C.L.E. versions sold as "Thrushbusters" (#497). The first issues were cream with cream interior, metal wingtop spotlights and no raised lip for locating the bonnet sticker. These versions are very rare as Corgi soon changed the Thrushbuster cream (joke not lost on me) to metallic purple with a yellow interior, plastic wingtop spotlights and a raised lip to locate the bonnet sticker. The rear facing periscope on both could be pressed to allow Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin to duck in and out alternately whilst shooting their guns ... with gunshot sounds as well ..... okay, clicks. The guns were empty after all.
On my two reasonably good examples, the plastic spotlights have broken off from the purple version and the periscope is missing from the cream version. The windscreen is also split but as the screen also includes bullet holes, this isn't too much of a worry. They would have originally been supplied with a diorama box and a 3D Waverley Ring but they are long gone. The model was withdrawn from sale in 1969 after Corgi had sold one and a half million of them (mainly in purple).
THe Husky Pirahna car (#1205) was made only during 1968 and is now very rare. Initially costing 1/6d (7½p), a mint example today still on its card and complete with three yellow or red rockets can fetch serious money.
Anyone want to share pics of their examples of the Thrushbusters (and the civilian / sheriff's Oldsmobiles) ? I would imagine that the real sheriff's car would be a 1961 Oldsmobile Rocket 88.
