no 32 jaguar e type..different size tyres

Post by Lee@kai76 »

Hi everyone

Hope someone can help, I have just received this jaguar and the tyres are of a different size, the front ones are thicker than the back.

Obviously my question is does this happen sometimes or have the tyres been replaced, what I find odd is the model is in excellent condition so why did it need tyres if they have been changed.

Thanks for looking and any comments

Hello Lee.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the tyres can be changed, can they. They won't pass past the bodywork wheel-arches, so they must bee factory fit, unless the base comes off!

Hi Ghosthunter

Thankyou for your help as usual, I see your point now..the back tyres do come off the hubs but I think I would probably damage them by getting them past the arches, it just seemed strange to fit different tyres that's all, especially because the rear wheels run smoothly in arches but the front ones seem to large and are catching slightly, they look like they would fit better the other way round.
Obviously then if it is a factory fit the tyres are just an error, oh and the base is fine.

Thanks again

Now looking at the different tyre types, it looks like I have got one with the 72 tread on the rear and the 45 tread on the front.

Maybe someone else can comment who owns this model with the 45 tread tyres as this is the only example I have, but if it had these on the rear of this one too it would be useless as a toy because when it's pushed along it just skates and the front wheel's don't turn because they are catching in the wheel arches. :(

That does qualify for an OOPS! model then and I see you have posted it there, thank's.

The tires are placed on the wire wheels by a machine and all the finished tires go into the same bin. The completed wheels (tires on wire rims) would all be placed on this model's base at one time. You have a better chance of winning the lottery than for this model to have received one axle having one size tire and the other axles having older size tires.

The front tires can be removed and replaced (I know as I have done it more than once). The tires might have come off during play, and the most common reason for them to come off is that they will break and split. I suspect tires from a donor model (or replacement reproduction tires) have been fitted to the front axle. It is nearly impossible to replace the rear tires on a fully assembled model (I've had only one successful try at doing so and it did leave marks on the tire).

Tampering/replacement of tires on the front axle, is by far, the best reason for the mismatched tire treads.
It might be time to start my "Bucket List."

Thanks for info Tinman, I have tested the front tyres to see if they can be removed and their on really tight, the rear tyres come off the rims easy.
The reason I checked is because I was going to look for a beat up model for the thin tyres for replacements for the front as the jag is still in really nice condition...oh well :(

That makes me lean strongly towards the front tires being reproductions. Most of the reproduction tires fit very tightly on the wire hub (much tighter than the original tires fit).

Thanks Tinman, It makes sense what you say because the tyres just don't fit right, I will try and remove them and look out for some originals.
