23d Trailer Caravan

Post by Idris »

The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) list a pink body/closed axle model (variation 23-4D) with a 'light blue' instead of an 'aqua' interior. I would suggest that this is probably a sunfade.
AIM's “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) lists as variation 23-4c a model with a yellow body/closed axles/8 x 18 BPW. This is a logical gap in Nick's variation table and, if confirmed, would slot in neatly as the new variation code 5. Oddly, AIM chose to code the retooled body as a separate issue, and their variation 23-5a (pink/with doorframe/8 x 18 BPW) is also plausible (see below), slotting into Nick's table as the new variation code 10 (or possibly 11 depending on the hitch foot casting details). Can anyone confirm this model's existence?
Stannard has an unlisted variation which is probably the same as AIM's 23-4c: yellow body/closed axles/square hitch foot/8 x 18 BPW.
Houghton's variation table contains a mistake since variation note 9 is not used. (It should pair with note 4.) His table is interesting since it includes mixed-wheel models, where one axle carries 8 x 18 BPW and the other 8 x 40 BPW. (N.B. One of these is on a retooled body, thereby lending credence to AIM's 23-5a variation.) It also makes clear that whilst the model began life with 8 x 18 BPW and finished with 8 x 40 BPW, the changeover was messy and occurred around the time that the model was recoloured. Houghton's variation code 23d-3 is a match for AIM's 23-4c and Stannard's 23-D2.
U.K. Matchbox did not examine the model.
