The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) has three decal variations: orange background (MW, and c/a GPW), bright yellow background (MW, c/a GPW, and r/a GPW), and light yellow background (c/a GPW, and r/a GPW).
The AIM's “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) supports the idea of different decals, but classifies only two types: orange background (MW, and c/a GPW), and yellow background (c/a GPW, and r/a GPW).
Stannard does not contain any variations not already catalogued by Nick.
Houghton notes that early baseplates were matt black, whereas later ones were gloss. His gloss black baseplates are variations 25a-5 (equivalent to Nick's variation code 5), 25a-7 (equivalent to Nick's variation code 6), and 25e-8 (equivalent to Nick's variation code 7). Of these three, only the second (i.e. Nick's variation code 6) can be found with either a matt or a gloss black baseplate. In addition, Houghton agrees with AIM regarding decal background colours, adding BPW to the list of models with yellow labels. His table shows the first three models (the same as the first three in Nick's variation table) having orange decals, whilst all subsequent models plus the c/a 10 x 24 GPW were issued with the yellow decals.
U.K. Matchbox examined the model in vol. 6, no. 3 (Aug. '82) p84, highlighting the use of gloss black baseplates later in the model's life. The variations in the decal background colour are also noted, but not linked to a timeline.
Please note that Nick's variation table contains an error, variation codes 3 and 4 being identical.
