King-Size No.K-7 Shelvoke & Drewry Refuse Truck

Post by Sir_Matchbox_96 »

Hi all!
I want to do a small review for the King-Size No.K-7 Shelvoke & Drewry Refuse Truck. I had a good buy last time and solved a little K7 mistery myself. I appreciate Nick's King Size guide and I will try my best to show some variations which are not covered by the K7 article.
The refuse truck can be found with or without side panel for the decals. Early issues had no side panel and the decals were applied to the rear of the refuse container. That was changed in the decal period, so a side panel was cast into the refuse container and and the decals were soon applied to the side panel. Later labels were applied instead of decals. We also have a variation to the linkage which allows us to tip the refuse container. It can be found either silver or unpainted. This variation is not easy to add to the timeline. Early issues (no side panel) and later issues (decals fitted) have unpainted linkages. I have one example with side panels and decals, which has a silver linkage.
The model can have a clear or blue tinted suspension clip.
We also have a variation to the hydrosleeve, it can be found in either red or black, but this is very easy to change between the models. (It is possible to find one with white hydrosleeve which should come from RW #6c Euclid dump truck)
Let's talk about the baseplate.
First of all it can be found in matt black or glossy black. Nick mentions that there is a variation with or without patent number. I seconded that and would add that we also have K-7's with or without tow guide.
The basplate shows the number N°K-7 on a raised plattform, which gives us the hint that the baseplate had been modified at some time. As I mentioned above, I had a good buy last week and found a K7 refuse truck with early (!) base without the raised plattform. Well...the original text was N°K7 instead of N°K-7. I was looking for an update for my "no side panel" variation and ended up with this find.
Don't know how special it is but I can't find a thread regarding this casting and had to share it with you.
I took many pictures of the different variations, feel free to use them.

Greetings,
Lucky Linus!

There are some different boxes, too. I just have this one, in my opinion the most beautiful one:

Great article Linus and well done on sorting out what is what. What a nice find you have as well. Considering the play value on a model such as this I would expect a long production period, although I have not checked this, but with the model's number modifications you mention and show, it probably was quite a number of Years and you may find even more variations.

I don't have any examples of this model, but your article has made me think about getting a few just so I can compare them with your findings... :D

There is also the Big MX version with either blue or red operating carbuncle.

Nice summary, guys. What is the blue plastic piece protruding from the front of the Big MX truck? Looks like a place to put a Phillips screwdriver.

The carbuncle is for operation of the rear tipping body via the battery operated power activator. A suitable sized Philips screwdriver will also fit (never use a Pozidriv).
The K7 was the first of six Super Kings to be converted to Big MX.
BMX BM-1 was a set that included the modified K7 with a folding slot pin and wormed tipping mechanism, together with an unloading site, some plastic shrapnel to serve as a load and the activating tool.
The slot pin would be deployed under the front of the truck (much like a slot car pin) and reversed along the slotted road via the red or blue carbuncle fitted to the road section. This drove a continuous rack to control the truck in either direction. Once in position the activator would be inserted into the front of the truck to tip out the load. Then the applicator would be moved to the conveyor belt section where the load is then fed to the incinerator section. You then use the activator in the front of the truck to lower the tipping body, then insert the activator back into the road section, reversing the rack to send the truck away. Driving the truck off the end of the rack folds the pin back underneath the truck enabling standard play, then driving around on the carpet to the other end of the incinerator to reload via the chute.

Big MX would make a decent thread in its own right.
Big MX BM-1 = S&D Refuse Truck (ex K7b) with Incinerator Site.
Big MX BM-2 = Ford D800 Tasker with 3x Tractors (ex K20a) and Tractor Production Line.
Big MX BM-3 = Scammell Mobile Crane (ex K12b) with Building Site.
Big MX BM-4 = Leyland Tipper (ex K4c) with Coal Conveyor.
Big MX BM-5 = Traxcavator (ex K8c) with Quarry Site.
Big MX BM-6 = AEC Merryweather Fire Escape (ex K15a) with burning building and rescue figures.
Big MX BM-A = Replacement Power Activator.

I recall the MX models being discussed in U.K. Matchbox. IIRC, they were not a success, and it proved impossible to convert the modified tooling back for normal production.

Here's another variation on the Bix MX version. The cut-out at the bottom of the body (ahead of the rear wheel) to clear the linkage can be either small or large. This difference can also be seen on the two items shown by AJR.
