26b Foden Cement Mixer

Post by Idris »

The NAMC’s “Catalog of all Series Matchbox Models” (second edition) has an interesting variation listed as 26-2H: without silver trim, brighter orange body and barrel, (assumed long baseplate with braces), ? x 36 BPW. Can anyone confirm a significant shade difference on this model? If so, does it have BPW, are they 9.5 or 10 mm diameter, and what diameter is the ejector ring? (Reminds me of this recent discussion).
Both the AIM's “1-75 Series Regular Wheels” catalogue (second printing, 1983) and Houghton highlight the existence of both light and dark GPW. Although AIM does not have any new variations, Houghton plugs an obvious gap in Nick's variation table with his variation 26b-10: orange body/orange barrel/9.5 x 20 BPW/long baseplate, with braces/4 mm ejector ring/with trim. Can anyone confirm this variation which would slot neatly into Nick's table as the new variation code 9?
Stannard does not list any variations not already covered by Nick.
U.K. Matchbox examined the model in vol. 3 no. 9 (Nov. '79) p 168, but did not identify any new variations although, unusually, the dark/light GPW variation is highlighted.

ADDENDUM: Lesney Link no. 7 (Mar. ’87) p197 and update in Lesney Link no. 8 (Jul. ’97) p238 reports an otherwise unlisted casting variation: “All models, except the earliest, have small triangular fillets on either side [at the top] of the centre windscreen pillar”. Apparently these fillets (which are on the inside edge of the pillar) are missing on grey-barrel/shorter baseplate examples but present on orange-barrelled/longer baseplate versions. It seems inevitable that crossover will exist. There's a really good comparison shot of models with and without the window fillets here.

Yes, there is a lot of shades. Not easy to take the picture with proper differences. There are even three shades of the orange painting by the very first models with the grey barrel

The salmon pink (top right) is particularly striking.

I have a model as described by you but with 3,5 mm ejector ring.
This model is not listed by Nick as well.

Here are four different colours and a Light Grey Barrel model a very different colour Orange.

I did post this model with-out the Silver trim a long time ago but did not raise a eye-brow then, it has Light Grey Wheels 10 x 36 Tread.
