Londoner mystery

Post by Miller »

Can someone shed some light on this one? I own it for ages, but never could find any hint of its origin

Hi Roland, I must admit that i cannot recall ever seeing this type of label on a #17 model before however the inclusion of a telephone number on the roof label tells me that this is a code 3.

An interesting bus Roland and thanks for showing it.

At first glance it looks like the roof number is a London number but I don't think there are enough numbers for that and also the London 0201 code didn't replace the 0171 and 0181 codes until around the year 2000, although it is possible that old buses could have been used for a more recent code 3 promotion.

It does however fit the format of a German telefon number with I think Essen area code and it is possible that this might be a German promotional model, maybe some of our German forum members can clarify if it is a German number.

Thanks Jim, I reckoned it was code 3, do you know any history behind it and how did you acquire your one?

Thx for your replies! I also checked the number as i live in the near of the city of Essen, but the number actual isn´t assigned. I where not able to find infos about it related weither to something german and also international. So the mystery continues. But good to hear, that Jim has another example, this should make shure, that its not a homebrew model.

I bought Ed Mercantino's collection years ago. It is a home labeled model. He had a few hundred home made and labeled models like this.

Hi Roland, check out the link below, the German connection to your bus might still be a possibility and that telephone number could have been an old ticket booking number.
