If you receive such an e-mail and want to be 100% sure, simply go to your browser and type www.paypal.co.uk in the address window. (Do NOT use the link in the e-mail.) If there is a problem, you will find notification of it when you access your account.

I receive about one a month, as Hugh said, never click any links in these emails. Forward them to spoof@paypal.com

I do the same John. Perhaps also worth noting that official Paypal emails always have your name included whereas fake/spoof ones tend to just say Dear member or Dear customer as they do not know your name.

Even so, as Hugh suggests, play safe and always go to your Paypal account and sign in that way and any genuine messages will be seen then.

These scammers try every trick in the book with messages, eg: You're limits have been increased, withdrawals are frozen, you have received an instant payment, please confirm your email and/or password, here is the receipt for your purchase from acme ltd, click here to donate to xyz charity, etc etc. Clicking on the links in the email will do one of many things including downloading a nasty payload to your computer or phone to steal your info or they direct you to a spoofed site to steal the details you input.

Nasty lot they are.

No financial institution, PayPal included, will mail their clients, asking them to update bank details etc., simple as that.
Anyone asking for my financial details, either by mail. hullabaloo, smoke or flag signals, will be ignored.

These scammers work on percentages, a few years ago the number of phishing emails sent daily was over 150m. The stats on this link are scary:

Hi All, About six months ago I was foolish enough to get caught with a PayPal scam they had about £3,000 out of my bank account. I tried to close my account down at the bank but the fraud squad insisted I kept it open I was also told by the bank to keep my account open or I would lose my street cred & lose out on some benefits. They said they would keep a watch on my account to see if anybody else went into it, like heck. A few days later we went down to the bank only to find that somebody had set up three more direct debits. We had a word with the fraud squad again, after one person had milked the account they sell your details to somebody else. We got all our money back, very upsetting. There was also an elderly lady in the bank who was in tears & in a terrible state as she had been scammed out of £8,000 felt really sorry for her Pete
